The municipal heat planning lays the foundation for a sustainable heat supply in Hofheim. It shows how buildings can be heated with local, climate-friendly energy in the future - independently of fossil sources.

To this end, the current energy requirements were recorded, local potential analyzed and target images developed for the coming years. The planning provides orientation for owners, companies and politicians - and makes it clear how a sustainable heat supply can be created step by step.

On December 10, 2025, the municipal council approved the draft concept for municipal heating planning. This means that the strategic planning instrument is now available with initial recommendations for action and a basis for decision-making for the stakeholders involved to ensure a sustainable heat supply in the long term and to achieve the climate protection targets.

With the heat planning for the district town, the town is fulfilling its responsibility under the Heat Planning Act and the Hessian Energy Act. The resolution has now created a well-founded decision-making aid without obliging the city or the population to implement individual measures.

Where do heating networks make sense in Hofheim and where is a decentralized solution likely to prevail? A digital map gives you an initial overview of potential suitability areas for the expansion of heating networks. The suitability areas identified are not legally binding and form the basis for further feasibility studies. Final event on municipal heat planning on March 24, 2026

The results of the Hofheim heat plan, the areas of suitability and measures identified and the next steps were presented on this evening in the town hall.

Interested parties were able to obtain information and exchange ideas on the topic of the heat transition at various stands run by the town of Hofheim, the Main-Taunus district, the State Energy Agency (LEA) and Syna.

The topic of heat pumps is on the minds of many building owners these days. It is therefore not surprising that well over 200 interested people came to the Hofheim town hall on Monday, February 10, 2025, to find out more and exchange ideas on this topic. Markus Frieske from Kelkheim talked about his own experiences of how a heat pump can be successfully installed in a 100-year-old house without façade or roof insulation. During the evening, practical tips were given on how everyone can check for themselves whether a house is suitable for a heat pump.

With municipal heat planning, a city can address the challenges of the heat transition and create a locally adapted roadmap for this transition. The main question here is: What type of heat supply is likely to be used to supply the individual sub-areas of a municipality in the future? The topics are heating networks and decentralized heat supply.

To involve citizens in this process, a kick-off event was held in the Hofheim town hall on Monday, June 24, 2024. There was all the information about municipal heat planning in Hofheim and the opportunity to ask questions. Results of the heat planning are expected in spring 2025.

Draft final report on municipal heat planning (PDF)

How will Hofheim heat in the future? This question forms the basis of the heating planning concept that the district town has now commissioned from Syna GmbH. The background to this is the Federal Government's Heat Planning Act. It obliges all municipalities to draw up a heating plan. According to First City Councillor Daniel Philipp, 54 percent of the final energy requirement in Hofheim is accounted for by private households. "This means that any improvement in this area will have a major impact on climate protection." The majority of households in Hofheim heat with natural gas.

According to Philipp, it is also important to involve citizens in the creation of the heating plan. For this reason, there will be an initial public event on the topic in spring, where interested parties can ask questions. The exact date is yet to be announced.

First of all, Syna will determine the current heat consumption and the resulting greenhouse gas emissions and forecast future heat requirements. Then the savings potential of which measures will be analyzed. Finally, a climate-neutral scenario for the year 2045 and a municipal strategy to get there will be drawn up. It is also important to monitor the achievement of interim targets.

Syna is being supported by the Freiburg-based high-tech start-up "greenventory", which emerged from the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems and has already assisted 125 municipalities with municipal heat planning. Also involved are various departments of the city administration, the municipal utilities, community energy cooperatives, housing associations, other energy suppliers, companies and ministries - and of course the citizens of Hofheim. The results of the municipal heat planning will be available and presented to the public in the course of 2025.
