Municipal vineyard

"White Riesling" in the Hofheim district

In order to preserve the tradition of wine growing in Hofheim am Taunus, the mayor at the time, Friedrich Flaccus, gave initial consideration to establishing a municipal vineyard. In October 1988, an application for permission was submitted to the Eltville wine-growing office for a plot of land to the south of the built-up area in Diedenbergen. Permission was granted on July 18, 1989 - but only for research and demonstration purposes. This means that the wine produced here is intended exclusively for personal use and may not be sold.

In spring 1990, under Mayor Rolf Felix, the land, which had been lying fallow until then, was plowed up. At the end of May of the same year, 405 seedlings of the "Weißer Rießling" grape variety, grafted onto American rootstock, were planted on the 1,334 m² site, which lies on a slope that slopes slightly to the south.

The maiden wine was harvested on October 10, 1994. The entire 1993 harvest had been eaten by starlings!

Every year, the town of Hofheim invites artists from Hofheim to take part in the wine label competition and design a motif for the Diedenbergen wine bottle label. A leaflet is also produced showing the label and providing information about the artist, the wine and the vineyard. The wines harvested so far have all been in the quality range. This may not be stated on the bottle label, despite the official approval of the vineyard, as the municipal vineyard is outside the vineyard sites. According to German wine law, only the indication "German table wine, white wine" is permitted. The attempt to obtain a separate vineyard site and thus become part of the "Rheingau" wine-growing region has so far failed.

The wine from the Hofheim vineyard in the Diedenbergen district is only available as a gift for good deeds and special merits. It is also served at prestigious town events. In addition, the Protestant and Catholic parishes in Diedenbergen traditionally receive a donation of wine for communion and mass respectively.

Curious? Why not stop by the vineyard and take the time to get lots of interesting information from our information boards.
